I’ve been working on a side project for the past few years called NewsMap . However, it actually started back in 2020 with a different problem. At the time, I was looking at houses in areas I wasn’t familiar with and realized how difficult it was to answer basic questions about a place. What’s the crime like? How are the schools? Is the air clean? Is the soil contaminated? What are the politics like? There was plenty of data out there, but it was scattered across dozens of different sources. That led me to build a project called WhereTo , which brought a lot of those datasets together geographically. Eventually I pivoted away from the housing idea, but I kept the datasets and the underlying engine. I realized the same approach could answer a much broader question: What’s happening around me or anywhere else I’m interested in? That became NewsMap. I added more public datasets along with GDELT news feeds and local news sources, with the idea that if something was happening near me or somewhere I was interested in then I should be able to see it on a map and get context about the area at the same time. Over time, the project grew into something much broader than news. NewsMap now combines news with public data from sources like the National Weather Service, USGS, FEMA, NOAA, and other government agencies to help answer a pretty simple question: What’s happening in this place right now? Depending on the location, you can explore things like severe weather alerts, earthquakes, wildfires and other disasters, river gauges, flood information, levees, bridges, weather conditions, and other location-specific information alongside the news. One of the problems I’ve been trying to solve is the fragmentation of public data. There is an incredible amount of useful information available, but it’s often spread across separate government websites, dashboards, APIs, and maps. NewsMap tries to bring that information together geographically and make it easier to explore. I’ve also been experimenting with features that go beyond individual map layers, including area briefings, following locations, alerts, and historical replay so you can go back and see what was happening in an area at an earlier point in time. It’s a PWA, so it works on desktop and mobile without requiring an app install. Most of NewsMap is free to use. The public-data layers are free; there’s an optional paid tier for features such as extended historical replay. I’d really like feedback from other builders.
