I've been fascinated by astronomy and our night sky for as long as I can remember. I'm no astronomer, and by no means an expert, but over the years I've learned a few basic principles and love that I can name constellations and key stars in the sky. In this hobby I've come across lots of really amazing free resources. Stellarium is definitely one of them. What I've felt has been lacking is a single resource that can take a noobie through the basics, like understanding how and why the sky changes through the seasons, to more advanced topics, in an intuitive and easy to follow way. That's what motivated me to build WhatTheStar.com as a side project. At its core is a sophisticated sky engine that drives the interactive narrated stories, the explorer views and the external view, where either the sun or earth is at the centre, as opposed to a first-person view from any position on the globe. Its focus isn't a full catalogue of known stars, but rather on what's observable with the naked eye or a pair of binoculars. Lots of options to customise your views including your bortle level (amount of light pollution), time, date, position, labels, celestial objects, grids and so on.
