Hey everyone, I wanted to share with you something I've been working on for the last several months — Cinephile License https://cinephilelicense.com/ It started as an argument with friends after watching Mulholland Drive — half the room loved it, half hated it. It turned into a whole brawl about art-house, so I pulled up my ratings to defend the films everyone said were garbage, and… yeah, it went sideways. Turns out I had no idea which of my takes were actually hot and which were just mainstream. Like, dunking on Suicide Squad was apparently the safe opinion, but my 1 star for Tropic Thunder nearly got me killed. After that I couldn't stop wondering who I even am as a cinephile, and whether I get to call myself one at all. Do I watch more than average? Do I rate soft or harsh? Which of my ratings are really different from the average? I never had a good way to check, and no tool really did it, so this summer I sat down and built one for myself. Honestly I figured it'd take an evening, just a 5 minute adventure, and then I got completely fascinated by all the data. But now it’s finished and I want to share it with you. It works pretty simple: you drop in your Letterboxd or IMDb export and it reads your whole rating history back to you and shows where you land next to everyone else. You get a score with a tier, the films you rate way above or below the crowd, your favourite decades, studios, languages, directors and actors, plus an AI-generated title and avatar, mostly for fun. For me the most interesting part turned out to be studios and franchises: it reminded me of films I've completely forgotten about (great way to expand watchlist btw).
