Original Summary
I built CalmMate because when you’re actually panicking, “open a wellness app and browse around” isn’t particularly useful. You need something that gets to the point. So CalmMate opens with a button: Having a panic attack? Tap below. Relief starts in 60 seconds. Tap it and you’re immediately taken through breathing and grounding. No hunting through a content library while your heart is racing. But I didn’t want to build another app that’s useful only during a crisis. So here’s the rest of CalmMate. Breathing. There are 9 techniques, including Extended Exhale, Physiological Sigh, Box Breathing, Bhramari and alternate-nostril breathing. You can also tell CalmMate roughly where your energy is — from frozen/numb to racing/wired — and it points you toward an appropriate exercise instead of making you choose blindly. Meditation. Pick 1 minute or 2 hours, then choose silence, rain, brown noise, ocean or fire. No course to complete. No streak you need to protect. Just sit, breathe and start. When sitting still isn’t what you need. There’s grounding and a simple interactive fidget tool too. Sometimes calming down means doing something rather than staring at a meditation timer. Journaling. There’s a daily prompt, a quick mood check, space for what happened, how you felt and what you’re grateful for. The entries stay private on your device and can be exported. Different people need different language. CalmMate has separate modes for adults, teens, kids and prenatal use rather than pretending the same experience works equally well for everyone. And there’s an Apple Watch version, because during a stressful moment your wrist may be a much better place for a calming tool than another reason to pick up your phone. You can also set breathing, meditation and journal reminders if you want CalmMate to be something you practice before you need it. The thing I deliberately left out? A paywall. CalmMate is free on iPhone and Apple Watch. I’m building it independently, and right now I’d rather have people actually use it and tell me where it fails than optimize it for subscriptions. I’ll put the App Store link in the comments. And if you try it, don’t just tell me whether you like it. Tell me the moment when you would have opened CalmMate but didn’t. That’s probably more useful to me than a five-star review. submitted by /u/nmrmaverick [link] [comments]
