i run a scanner that scores reddit complaint threads 1 to 10 as business opportunities. 1,416 threads so far, and 29% of them score 8 or higher. i wondered if the wording alone tells you anything, so i searched the threads for common phrases and checked how often each group scored 8+. did better than average: - "invoice" 56.7% (60 threads) - "manually" 53.6% (97) - "spreadsheet" 53.3% (92) - "excel" 44.4% (45) - "clients" 42.0% (119) did worse: - "subscription" 23.7% (59) - "hate" 21.3% (61) - "alternative" 18.0% (128) - "self-host" 11.8% (51) so a thread with "manually" in it was about 3x as likely to score 8+ as one with "alternative". it makes sense once you think about it. someone doing a thing by hand or in a spreadsheet is already paying for the problem with their time every week. "i hate X" is usually someone venting about a tool they'll keep using anyway. "alternative" surprised me most.
