I've been doing interviews with solo makers & founders to learn about their journey. This latest interview is with Simon, a PM in Germany. He built Caddie Live, a live-scoring app for golf, on his own while keeping his normal job. It started as a way to keep score with his mates and grew into something clubs use for trips, societies and tournaments. A few things he said that I keep thinking about: The PM trap. His instinct with every problem is to improve the product. Not enough signups, fix onboarding. Not enough rounds, add a feature. He eventually made himself a rule: no more product work until he gets real users. He also admitted he hasn't always kept it. Money he wasted. He spent on ads that did almost nothing, built features before anyone asked for them, and polished parts of the app almost nobody saw. Ten users telling him what annoyed them turned out to be worth more than thousands of people scrolling past an ad. Laptop vs 8th tee. Something that makes perfect sense on a laptop becomes confusing when someone's standing on the tee in the rain with three people waiting behind them. Watching real people use it taught him more than anything else. On not being an engineer. He's spent his whole career needing a dev team to build his ideas. AI changed that; his line was that a few years ago this app would have been a document with ideas in it. His view is that the scarce thing now isn't engineering, it's knowing which problems are worth solving. He's not chasing a big company. He said he'd rather have a healthy independent business that gives him more choice over his time.
