Original Summary
Hello Reddit, I'd like to showcase our open-source project that is currently prelaunching on Kickstarter . I tried to buy an air quality monitor for our bedroom in 2023, but I ended up not really liking any particular device. I wanted a wireless, good-looking and accurate air quality monitor with a long battery life. No single device ticked all the boxes, so I decided to build it for fun - initially just for myself. Eventually, somehow, a team grew around the project, and we decided to make the device open-source (we'll be open sourcing it as part of the Kickstarter campaign) and to also build and sell it to other smart home enthusiasts. You can read more about our display journey and the enclosure design . Values We pledge to open-source 3 years of our work as part of the campaign (all CAD models, the firmware, mobile apps, optional server component - everything). No subscriptions. The mobile apps are free and don't even require registration. This is a handcrafted product - both literally (the wooden enclosure) and figuratively (code, apps, firmware, PCBs). We only ever use LLMs to force ourselves to think more, not less. The device can be used with a smart home (Matter over Thread, or ZigBee) or completely offline (radio disabled, no cloud, NFC to phone app only). Design This isn't yet another white plastic box you'll be trying to hide behind a plant. Our design is wood, glass and a little bit of 3D printing. And magnets. (Who doesn't love magnets?) Screws, not glue. This device is meant to last, and is designed to be user-repairable. Except temperature/humidity and atmospheric pressure, all sensors are replaceable. Measurements and sensors We integrated the best sensors we could find. We measure what we think most people should be interested in, with possible add-ons (see below): CO2 (Senseair Sunrise ultra-low-power NDIR sensor) Particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5 and PM10, Bosch Sensortec BMV080) NO2 (Interlink Electronics 110-540 electrochemical sensor) CO (it's not a CO alarm though, Interlink Electronics 110-114 electrochemical sensor) Temperature (Sensirion SHT45-AD1B) Humidity (Sensirion SHT45-AD1B) Atmospheric pressure (for pressure compensation of the other sensors, Bosch Sensortec BMP581) Fanless PMx sensing: Airgeek is one of the first air quality monitors with BMV080, a fanless particulate matter sensor made by Bosch Sensortec. This device produces no audible noise during operation (that was one of the problems I also ran into in 2023). It counts particulates suspended in the free-flowing air. True VOCs (NO2 + CO) instead of a "VOC index": We also decided to pick a fight with the broadband VOC sensors. We think they are a bit of a snake oil, and we measure actual pollutants (NO2 and CO in the base sensor set) directly with electrochemical sensors instead. If you're interested in the details, I'll put our rationale as a comment under the post. We think a debate about the usefulness of broadba
