Original Summary
My app, launched recently. Sharing the decisions rather than the pitch, since that is what I would want to read. What it is: a bill reminder for iPhone & Android with one unusual feature. You can mark a bill's money as "set aside", which does nothing in your actual bank and only changes a number in the app. That sounds pointless written down. It is the only mechanic that has ever stopped me double spending money I already owed. Three things I got wrong before launch: My first design had every bill as a big card with two buttons, so you could see two bills per screen. I redesigned it to a dense list with hidden swipe actions, felt very pleased with myself, and then realised nobody discovers swipe actions on a brand new app. Went back to visible buttons on every row. Density lost to discoverability and it was not close. I started with a ten bill free tier. That is generous enough that almost nobody ever hits the wall, which means almost nobody ever considers paying. Now it is 5. Still not sure three is right either, and I will move it if week one ratings drop. Open question I would genuinely like opinions on: no free trial at all, just a permanently free tier. My reasoning was that an app whose entire job is preventing surprise charges should not use a countdown to create one. But I am aware that trials convert better and I may be being precious about it. submitted by /u/anton_cat [link] [comments]
