Original Summary
I'm a solo dev from the Netherlands. A few weeks ago I shipped Clipwise, a Chrome extension that saves web pages into Notion databases. The reason I built it: every clipper I tried either wanted its own account before it would talk to my Notion, ran my pages through their server, or saved half an article. Mine talks only to Notion's API with a key you create yourself, stored locally. No account, no backend, no analytics — there is literally nothing for me to log. What happened since: - Launched on Product Hunt, ended #6 of the day. ~600 visits to my store page. - 87 users now, 14 uninstalls (6 of those were my own test machines). - One newsletter picked it up on its own. That's still my best traffic source. - 1 rating so far. Five stars, no text. It came from a prompt inside the extension that only appears after five successful clips. - 9 impressions in Chrome Web Store search. In a month. Nine. That last number is the thing nobody warned me about. The store ranks on installs and reviews, and I'm up against the official Notion clipper with millions of users. So the loop is: to rank you need reviews, to get reviews you need users, and to get users you need to rank. Every single user I have came from outside the store. Things that actually worked: - Reading every launch comment and shipping v0.2 five days later, built almost entirely from what people asked for. Duplicate detection (it ignores ?utm_source junk in URLs) came straight out of one question. - Asking for a review inside the product, right after the user just succeeded at something, instead of begging on social media. - Emailing creators one at a time, with a real first line about their own work. Slow, but it's the only cold outreach that gets replies. Things that didn't: - Directories. Every one I tried turned out to sell listings to makers rather than send readers. One wanted $249 for "100+ directories", another $29.99 to skip a queue. - A Show HN. It got flagged, and I'm fairly sure the reason is that I registered my HN account under the product's name instead of my own. Lesson learned the hard way. - Posting a "v0.2 is out" update thread. 31 views. Update posts are worth a fraction of launch posts. Free, no account, nothing leaves your computer: https://clipwise-app.github.io Happy to answer anything about the build — the hardest parts were finding the real article on messy pages (it scores DOM blocks and reads inside web components) and mapping rich text onto Notion's block model. And if you use Notion, tell me which page it clips wrong. That's how v0.2 got written. submitted by /u/Lazy_Doughnut4597 [link] [comments]
