I built a budgeting app, and I’m looking for twenty people to try it and tell me what needs work. It’s called OWL. It shows you where your money went, what’s left to budget, and a projected date for becoming debt free. I built it because the budgeting tools I was paying for kept raising their prices and were missing features I wanted. With rising costs putting pressure on people around me too, I wanted to build something that could help. It works today, but it isn’t finished. That’s why I’m asking. What it does OWL uses zero-based budgeting: you decide what your money needs to cover before you spend it. It runs on Windows, with an Android companion. Your budget is stored in a file on your computer and you may also choose local backups, your own cloud backup, or hosted with OWL. Anything you back up to OWL is encrypted with a household passphrase that I can’t access or recover. A few things you can try: Everyday budgeting, recurring transactions, split transactions and account reconciliation. Reports you can click through to see the transactions behind the numbers. Debt Payoff, which uses your balances, APRs and minimum payments to project your debt-free month and interest costs. Compare Snowball and Avalanche methods, and explore how extra payments affect the projection. Imports from YNAB 4, EveryDollar, Monarch, CSV, OFX/QFX and QIF. * Optional bank connections through Plaid, Instant-Sync between devices, and AI Assist for receipt text and sorting imported transactions. What I’m asking Use OWL for a month and tell me what broke, what confused you and what you’d change. You can start fresh or import a copy of your budget and try it alongside your current setup. Blunt is useful. “I couldn’t work out how to do X” is one of the most valuable things you can tell me. It’s just me building this. I read every report myself, and you’ll be talking directly to me. What you get Once I approve your application and activate your tester features, every paid feature is free during the beta. Complete a month of testing and the one-time Premium Upgrade is yours for life. The separate Instant-Sync, AI Assist and bank connection subscriptions aren’t included in that lifetime offer. A few rough edges up front The Windows installer isn’t code signed yet, so Windows will show a warning. The setup page walks you through it. Android currently installs from an APK rather than the Play Store. Your household passphrase can’t be recovered by anyone, me included. Keep a safe copy. There will be bugs I haven’t found yet.
