I wanted Slack to do more. Tasks, notes, somewhere to keep decisions without digging through old messages. Every answer seemed to involve connecting another app and paying another subscription. Then I got into self-hosting. Things escalated. This is Deft : an open-source workspace with chat, tasks, notes, knowledge and a calendar, running on your own server. The part I care about most is what happens after the conversation. You discuss something, make a decision, create a task—and a week later, you should still be able to find why you’re doing it. “Pretty sure we discussed this somewhere” gets old. There are agents and a ChatGPT connection through MCP too. Those are optional; the core workspace works without an AI provider. It’s still alpha. I’ve probably taken “how hard could it be?” further than advisable, but there’s a working product now, and this is the walkthrough. Free software, Docker Compose setup, your hosting. Any optional model usage is on your own API keys. (Preferably an Open AI key because it has an embedings model) The video uses demo data. What the video doesn’t show: Deft has an App Author Kit for building and sideloading your own apps and workflows. So when you need another tool, you can build it into your workspace instead of vibecoding yet another standalone app you have to keep in sync. I’m finishing a CRM as the first flagship example.
