Earlier this month, Google Research and HHMI Janelia published the complete wiring diagram of a male fruit fly’s brain and central nervous system: more than 166,000 neurons and 125 million synaptic connections. By strange coincidence, I had just finished building Fly Lab , a small artificial-life laboratory for iPhone. To be completely clear: Fly Lab does not run the complete 166,000-neuron connectome on your phone. It uses a compact, interpretable model inspired by published fruit-fly behaviour, physiology and connectome research. I wanted to turn some of the questions behind that research into something you can touch and experiment with. It is not really a game. There are no points and no prescribed way to win. You place sucrose, yeast, fruit, water or environmental hazards inside a 3D chamber. You can alter light, temperature, humidity and time, then observe how the flies respond through: feeding, tasting and rejection movement, rest and sleep-like behaviour grooming and environmental stress energy, hydration, protein and health egg, larva, pupa and adult development a reduced neural map connecting sensory input, internal state and behaviour The chamber continues developing while you are away, so an experiment can become a small colony over time. I also want to be open about how it was made. This was roughly six months of collaboration between me and AI. It was not a one-prompt app generator. I directed the product, designed the experience, tested it, rejected plenty of bad directions and kept rebuilding things. AI helped with research synthesis, prototyping, programming, debugging and challenging my assumptions. The result is a deliberately strange little app: part simulator, part observational toy and part pocket laboratory.
