Hi r/SideProject , I’m Fabian — a social dancer and software developer. I built a free side project called Dance Event Finder , a map-first website for finding social dance events. The problem came from travelling and visiting unfamiliar cities: finding a salsa, bachata, kizomba, swing, etc. event often means searching through Instagram accounts, WhatsApp groups, Facebook Events, venue websites and local calendars. Even when you find an event, it is hard to understand where it actually is or what else is happening nearby. So I built a map-first experience: open an area, see events on the map, filter by dance style and date, and open a clear event page with the important details. I’ve also tried to make it useful for organizers, not just dancers: Manage the event details in one place Share an event link with a ready-to-send text containing the date, location, price, description and relevant links Give dancers one clear page to send around in WhatsApp groups, Instagram bios, Facebook posts, etc. The product itself is coming along, but I think the real challenge is not building the map. It is solving the supply-side cold start. Organizers already have Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp groups and ticketing platforms. Dancers already have their local networks. A new platform has to earn trust and provide enough immediate value before it can become useful as a discovery layer. I don’t want to pretend I have solved that yet. My current thought is to position Dance Event Finder less as “another place to post your event” and more as a shareable, structured event page that can sit behind the channels organizers already use. Over time, those linked event pages could also make local dance scenes easier to discover publicly. I would love honest feedback from people who have built community, marketplace, or data-dependent side projects: How did you approach the early supply-side cold start? Would you focus first on organizers, local contributors, or importing publicly available event information? What assumption would you try to disprove first if this were your project?
