I made an Apple TV app that puts your home security cameras on your TV. It has been on the Apple TV App Store since August and people buy it, so each time I get a purchase notification my confidence grows that I really made something that people want. So naturally I thought: Android TV has to be the same market again, only bigger. I spent a few weeks porting it, got it running on a Xiaomi 4K stick, uploaded the bundle, filled in a hundred forms about data safety and target audiences, and Google approved it. A hundred and seventy-seven countries. I opened the listing in my browser, there it was with its screenshots and its little price tag, and I went to bed feeling like a champ. Then I did what any responsible founder does with a fresh listing and a few hundred euros of past sales: I bought ads. Google offered me an "App installs" campaign, which sounded like exactly the thing, and within a day it reported hundreds of clicks. Not one install. I studied the reports like a detective and concluded that all those clicks were phones, and a phone obviously cannot install a TV app, so Google was showing my TV ad to people playing candy games on the bus. Very clever of me. I paused it and moved on. Next I tried Reddit ads, aimed at the people who actually own the NAS my app talks to. Better clicks, nice and cheap, a handful of them even pressed the Play Store button on my website. Which takes you to my app on the play store, but still no installs. I decided the problem must be my landing page, that it was written for people who already wanted the thing and did nothing for a curious homelab person at midnight, and I started planning a rewrite. Ten days into this, an email arrives from someone interested in my app for Android TV. Polite, slightly worried. He wants to buy the app but cannot find it in the Play Store on his TV. Is it still active? It was not. It never had been. Somewhere in the Play Console, under a tab under a tab, there is a page where you tell Google which kinds of devices your app is for, and you have to opt in to televisions separately and go through a separate review for it.
