Original Summary
Productivity, where ChatGPT and most AI assistants are listed, is up ~55% in time spent and has roughly doubled its revenue since 2025. No other big category comes close. The rest of the chart is just as interesting: - Games, by far the biggest bubble, is down ~15% in revenue. Books (-39%) and Lifestyle (-29%) are falling too. - News: ~5% less time spent, revenue basically flat. - Sports is the weird one: time spent down ~42%, revenue up ~20%. - Graphics & Design usage is up ~50%, but revenue barely moved. My read if you're choosing what to build : Money is going to tools that save people time, especially AI-powered ones, while games, books and news are flat or shrinking. A hot category also means more competition, though, so treat this as a map, not a guarantee. Curious whether people building apps see the same thing in their own numbers. And does anyone have an explanation for the Sports drop? How to read it: X axis = growth in time spent since 2025 Y axis = revenue growth Bubble size = revenue Source : a16z newsletter, data from Sensor Tower (US only, as of Sept 15). Sensor Tower only counts App Store / Google Play spending, so ads, web subscriptions and enterprise deals aren't included, which likely understates News and Business. submitted by /u/Alekssss- [link] [comments]
