I run a personal finance tracker called Aurum. For months, the free tier showed 9 cards on the dashboard. 6 worked. 3 were locked behind a paywall, greyed out with lock icons. I thought the locked cards were selling the Pro tier. Show people what they're missing, right? Turns out they were just annoying. I rebuilt the free tier earlier this month. Removed the locked cards entirely. Now it shows 6 fully functional cards and nothing locked. The 3 Pro features still exist, they just don't haunt your dashboard anymore. I think people hate being reminded of what they can't have every time they open the app. It doesn't make them want to upgrade. It makes them feel nickeled and dimed. The locked cards weren't a feature preview. They were a persuasion tax. Every time someone opened the app to check their balance, they paid it. Still early. Zero paid conversions yet.
