When you make a business, is the idea to just earn side income or do you actually want to replace your 9 - 5 ? I think thats the first question you should ask before deciding what sort of product to build. I check product hunt daily for the past few months and my intention is just to observe what sort of products get posted. No joke, it's almost always the same products at a glance. The Notetaker / Journal The calorie tracker The screen recorder The voice to text etc Sure, most products are variants of each other so this makes sense mixed with the lack of creativity each one of them have. It seems like rather than innovating with new ideas to those types of products, people are just competing on pricing . This means, releasing the same features but knocking the price down as low as possible (cough $9/mo or $10 lifetime) and then praying for their first paid user. -- People will pay more if you actually bring value to the table. The very first product I released over 1 year ago was rough, buggy, lacking lots of features but I charged $50/mo on the most basic landing page you can imagine if you can even call it that. It was only a top section of the page and a moving background video sample, and no concept of design. People still paid $50/mo because the product was innovative, and actually came with a new way of solving the problem others never thought to tackle. Over the course of a year, I kept increasing the price. At a minimum, it costs $50/mo all the way up to $199/month. Im still getting customers every week willing to pay that amount. People have money and are willing to spend on products that are worth it . $9/mo means you need 200 customers. That's a lot of customers. It took me 6 months to get my first 100 customers at $50/mo. Reaching 200 customers took me less time than that. -- The moral of this rant but also advice post to help you is that you should not undersell yourself. If you made something great, then highlight that via Youtube videos or Product demos. Don't just re-invent the same wheel and wonder why you aren't making sales. Take a new spin on the existing idea.
