I am following on the recent post around AI making everyone a builder but not a buyer -)... You've probably seen this chart. A new AI image tool, file converter, or utility launches. Traffic climbs fast on SEO, Product Hunt, and word of mouth. Then the team adds a signup wall or a 3-credit cap, and traffic falls just as fast. Plot it and you get an upside-down V. I call it the Inverted V Syndrome . It's the rise-then-collapse pattern you get when a tool gates its core value before users form a habit. The key difference from normal churn is that users don't leave after trying the product. They leave at the gate. The gates I see doing the most damage: Signup before any result. You ask for commitment before proving value. Quality ransom. Only watermarked or low-res output is free, so it isn't really free. Mid-task credit caps. You interrupt people at peak frustration. Bait-and-gate. The paywall appears at download, after the user did all the work. Free-tier rollbacks. You punish the early users who built your traffic. The math is brutal. If about 3% convert, the other 97% leave with nothing, and you earn nothing from them. Then bounce signals hurt your rankings, "used to be free" threads rank for your brand name, and the right side of the V gets steeper. A quick gut check I use, which I call the Gate Timing Test: Does every visitor get one complete, usable result before any ask? Does the first ask come after users return, not on their first visit? Is there a way to keep going without paying? Would a free user still share the tool? If you answer no to two or more, the gate is probably your problem, not demand. The fix usually isn't killing the paywall. It's moving it later and adding a middle path, like a daily soft limit or letting people earn an extra use, so "pay or leave" becomes "pay or earn."
