For the past 2 months I’ve been working on a side project called MapSkins GPS . The idea started because I always thought it was weird that we customize basically everything in our cars, but CarPlay navigation always looks almost exactly the same. So I started building a navigation app where you can completely change the style of the map. You can use themes inspired by games, cars, retro maps, neon styles, minimal maps, etc. The theme also carries over to Apple CarPlay , which ended up being one of the hardest parts of the project. What started as basically a fun customization idea slowly turned into a full navigation app. I’ve had to build things like: Turn-by-turn navigation CarPlay support Rerouting Voice guidance Lane guidance Custom map styles Safety camera alerts Multiple navigation UI layouts Search and places A bunch of stuff I definitely underestimated when I started lol Getting CarPlay working properly was probably the biggest challenge. There are a lot more restrictions around navigation apps than I expected, and testing something that has to work both on the phone and the car screen at the same time has been interesting. It’s now actually live on iOS, and I’ve been slowly improving it based on what people complain about, request, or break 😂 I’m still working on it constantly and have a pretty big list of things I want to add. I’m curious what other builders think: Would you actually customize your navigation map, or do you think this is one of those things that sounds cooler than it is?
