I’ve been working on Tidalic , a Chrome extension that grew out of research we’ve been doing into how university students manage their time in blended and online learning. One thing we kept hearing about was the content backlog . You find a paper, article, video or PDF that seems worth coming back to. Saving it is easy... bookmark it, leave the tab open, add it to a read-later list... and that works fine until the list starts growing faster than you can actually consume it. Then the system breaks down when you need it most. The idea we started exploring was: Instead of only saving the content, allocate time for it. A saved-content list can grow almost indefinitely. Your calendar can’t. So Tidalic estimates how long a webpage, PDF or YouTube video will take and helps put that time into an available slot in your Google or Outlook calendar. The event can move later if plans change; the important part is that the thing you intended to consume now has some actual time allocated to it. The video demonstrates this using an especially high-priority piece of educational content. Although the idea came from research with students, I suspect the same problem applies to researchers, developers, founders, analysts and other knowledge workers who accumulate more potentially useful material than they have time to get through.
