Original Summary
I wanna start by saying thank you to this community, which generated me a staggering 69K views (:D - for real though )on my single last post here. Yes, I was losing my mind seeing a random first purchase, which I totally didn’t expect, but it happened and I couldn’t be more thankful for all the support I recieved from all of you. Even some heat was great too lol My pledge stands to all the customers, and right now a totally new, more awesome update Fezer 3.0.7 is sitting in Apple’s review queue at this very moment. It has a better, more streamlined design, new features, fewer bugs (probably new bugs yet to be discovered), and hopefully makes a little more sense than the last update. So I thought I’d follow up and share a couple of things I’ve learned along the way, plus one little development trick that saved me a lot of time. I’ll end with a small change I made to the paywall that actually surprised me. Fezer exists because I wanted my own tool to help me keep better track of my day-to-day life, and I guess it’s also my shot at building something useful beyond my full-time employment as a carpenter. Yes, the app is vibe-coded, and yes, that’s one of the reasons all the important data stays local on your device and doesn’t leave it, besides some basic analytics. Here’s what I’ve learned in the two months Fezer has been on the App Store. My understanding #1: Reddit rocks. It produced a much bigger result than I ever expected. The community is hella engaged, and I recieved around 205K total views last week. I deliberately did not insert direct links into my posts, and it still produced a huge spike in traffic to my website. But it didn’t result in nearly as many downloads. Where I probably lost most of you was the website itself, which is going to get rehauled pretty soon. My understanding #2: Videos, even scrappy ones, convert better than text. Pretty simple lesson. Whenever I show the app actually moving and working, people understand it much faster than when I try to explain it with paragraphs of text. My understanding #3: Running Fezer as a business has two engines right now. One is product development. The second is distribution. And both of them are beasts. So I designed two-week cycles where I build and ship an update, then push distribution like a madman. I hate to admit it, but every time I make a post my brain shrinks a little because I hate exposure. But this type of work is unavoidable. Make as many posts as you can. Learn what works. Double down on the content that worked. Discard what didn’t. Rinse, repeat. My understanding #4: The paywall needs to be a process. I’m a noob at this, honestly. The first version I shipped had only one step. It fired off within 30 seconds of someone entering the app, and overall it wasn’t a very pleasant experience. So I started looking for videos on YouTube and found one called “He Tested 4,700 Paywalls. These Won.” by Mobbin. I was determined to improve my paywall, but I’m extremely tight on time. I usu
