Original Summary
We recently got to the release point so we needed a domain and name (deliberately not mentioning name or product, don't want to promote). We picked the name early, the way you do, because it sounded right. It was cool, we liked it and that was reflecting nature of what we were making. .com domain wasn't available but that's not a big deal. A few days ago, we are at the poin of setting up everything to go-live so we start looking for domain options. It was the first time we actually searched it and go figure... four other products from the same category are using it. One of them had launched about six weeks earlier with similar positioning as ours but very different product. Nothing was legally wrong but we hit realisation that every bit of SEO, every mention, and every "oh, have you seen X" conversation was going to land on someone else's product. So we renamed our creation. No big deal but the name was in many places in the code, documents, emails etc. It took a bit of work (even with AI) to change and verify all mentions. Lesson learnt: when you have a cool name in mind, research it first. submitted by /u/grumpy-554 [link] [comments]
