built this because my own 4k drone files stuttered on my apple tv over a gigabit cable, and everyone kept telling me to go fix my network. the network was fine. i measured the wire mid stutter and it was delivering about 5x what the file needed. the real cause turned out to be interesting enough that it became the whole product. the apple tv forward buffer is a fixed budget of bytes, not seconds, so it quietly shrinks in time as bitrate climbs. i measured about 31 seconds of buffer on a 7 mbit file, 5 seconds at 37, and 2 seconds at 155. two seconds of runway means any hiccup is visible, and no player setting moves it. i tried all of them and measured each one. so it stops streaming. it plays off the smb share immediately, downloads the same file to the box in the background, grabs the ind
