Yesterday I made a post in this community about how vibe coding is dragging software quality down and how I think the market is eventually going to correct pretty hard. Reading through the replies got me thinking about something else: a lot of the worst code I come across seems to come from the same corner of the market, extremely cheap outsourcing, often from India, where underpaid developers are pushed to ship whatever the client asks for as fast as possible and sell it at any cost. Why? I’m a backend developer, and I’ve been working on a BaaS project with two university colleagues for over a year; more than once, I’ve come across something truly unbelievable: Indians trying to sell shoddy SaaS products, often claiming they’ve been accepted into YC or have major clients. Then I’d take a look at the site and immediately notice three recurring patterns: The site was completely "vibe-coded" (fuck that) They lied about the nature of the business and their investment status They frequently tried to hide the fact that they were Indian (why?) So I started doing some research, comparing three markets: the USA, the EU, and India. What I found was actually more interesting than “Indian developers are just bad.”: India has one of the largest and fastest-growing developer populations in the world, but it also has a much bigger concentration of juniors, students, freelancers and low-cost outsourcing compared to the US and most of Europe. At the same time, Indian developers seem significantly more optimistic about AI coding tools: in Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey, 56% of Indian developers said they somewhat or highly trusted AI tools, compared with 28% in the US, 31% in Italy and just 22% in Germany. India also had a much higher share of students among respondents. Put that together with an extremely competitive job market, very aggressive pricing, the pressure to build a portfolio as quickly as possible, and a huge YouTube/LinkedIn ecosystem built around “build a SaaS in 30 minutes with Cursor,” and the pattern starts to make a lot more sense. So maybe it’s our own fault that we’re now saddled with Indians writing shitty code. But here I have a doubt. Over the last five years, the number of Indian developers has increased by 400%, rising from around 5 million to approximately 21 million. Yet, code quality hasn't improved (as it has in the EU and US markets), it has actually deteriorated. Why is that? There’s also a practical reason why I’m trying to understand this. I’m currently building Foundel , a platform aimed at helping developers and teams build serious SaaS products with reusable infrastructure, proper architecture and AI assisted workflows. So part of this research is also me trying to understand exactly which segment of the developer market I should be building for.
