Original Summary
From 2023 to 2025, I provided a service on Fiverr where I would take a digital video, record its playback through a Sony SLV-N88 VCR, and back out to a digital file complete with tape artifacts for a nostalgic and retro look. The effect was applied for music videos, short films, ads, school projects, and other content. Back then, I had a full-time remote job that allowed me to do this when there was nothing else going on. While the beer money was sweet doing these by hand, I paused the Fiverr gig indefinitely to focus full-time on my full-stack engineering role that was on-site. Being laid off recently pushed me to finish my side project Helical, which automates everything I did back then into a simple 3-step process for the end user: upload, verify e-mail, checkout. It does the rest. From there, the conversion pipeline automates these steps: Signals the VCR to start recording through IR Plays the video out onto the VCR Once playback is done, VCR stops recording Rewinds the tape back to the beginning VCR plays back the VHS recording, and digitizes the end result Processes video including deinterlacing (using Yadif or Yadif x2 for double framerate) Uploads back to customer for a preview and option to approve Now that I have it fully built out and went live with it, I wished I had automated this when I started doing those gigs manually. I'm posting this because I've decided to make the service free indefinitely to stress test the service and identify areas of improvement. I'd appreciate any honest feedback of the service: does it work? Did you experience any problems? I'd like to know! https://helical.video Attached is an example of a digitized result using the same pipeline. submitted by /u/rEverblack [link] [comments]
