I’ve been a backend developer for 6 years, and I think Replit, Lovable and the whole “build an app from a prompt” wave created a generation of people who confuse generating code with engineering software. I use AI every day, but there’s a huge difference between a developer using Claude or ChatGPT to implement an architecture they understand and someone asking an LLM to design, write and modify an entire product they can’t explain. The problem isn’t AI, it’s surrendering every technical decision to it. A demo that works is not proof that the authentication, permissions, data model, failure handling or architecture make any sense. Good developers will become much faster with AI because they still supervise the system; pure vibe coders are just outsourcing decisions they don’t understand. I think the current hype will correct itself hard: when anyone can generate another CRM, AI wrapper or SaaS in a weekend, building stops being the differentiator. The market gets saturated, mediocre products become disposable, and engineering judgment becomes valuable again. Vibe coding won’t disappear, but I’d bet the idea that “software engineering is obsolete because you can just prompt the whole product” is going to age terribly. If you actually want to build software instead of generating demos, learn a real backend platform: Supabase, Appwrite, Firebase, PocketBase, anything that forces you to understand auth, databases, permissions, storage, APIs and deployment is infinitely more useful than hiding everything behind a “describe your app” box. Replit and Lovable are great at making people feel productive fast, but that’s exactly the trap: if you don’t understand what sits underneath, you’re not building leverage, you’re building dependency. Learn a proper BaaS, learn SQL, learn how auth and access control work, learn how data moves through a system. Then use AI on top of that.
