Original Summary
Disclosure up front: I made this. It's NovelDesk, a place to write a novel in the browser. I'm solo, it started as a Mac app, and the web version went live this month. When I moved it to the web I gave the free version one rule: it never talks to my server. No account, the manuscript sits in the browser's storage, a .docx import gets parsed on your own machine, and a backup is a file you download. That rule ended up drawing the pricing for me. Anything that needs a server is paid: syncing between devices, keeping every version, Word/EPUB/PDF export, publishing chapters as pages people can read, and the optional AI pictures. Everything else is free, for up to two manuscripts of 30 chapters. Paid is $8 a month or $60 a year. What I didn't see coming was the storage part. Safari clears a site's data if you don't visit it for 7 days. So the free version can't really promise your book is safe, and I had to say that on the screen. It now says your work is kept for 7 days, and it keeps nudging you to download a backup. It's the least growth-friendly sentence on the whole site and I went back and forth on it for a while. Asking the browser for persistent storage helps on some browsers, but the browser decides, not me. Two things I'm watching now: whether people who hit the 30-chapter limit upgrade or just start a second manuscript whether the 7-day warning scares people off before they've written anything If you run something with a big free tier that only lives on the user's device, how did you explain the "your data is only here" part without making it sound scary? https://noveldesk.app submitted by /u/robostoa [link] [comments]
