Original Summary

Three days ago I posted here about my first day promoting on Reddit: 12 posts, 9 of them removed, most by Reddit's spam filter before anyone saw them. A few people asked how it would go from there, so here's the follow-up. (Disclosure: I'm the founder. I'm not naming the product or linking it, since I already used my one mention here.) The product is an online electronics workshop for kids: lessons, broken circuits to fix and a free-play breadboard. Free to try, no account needed. Numbers since launch, counted as clicks on "try it free" (opens, not unique people): • 1,204 opens in total, 869 of them (72%) from Reddit • One Romanian programming sub: 627 • One Serbian programming sub: 115 • A breadboard sub: 40 • This sub: 37 • French programming sub: 17. Everything else was under 11. What I learned: The account matters more than the post. On day 1 my account had about 1 karma, and 9 of 12 posts died instantly. Two weeks of commenting would have saved them. After a day of replying to comments, the same kind of post went through. One link post per day, at most. A second removal on the same day seems to put the whole account under a site-wide filter. Small local subs beat big English ones. My two best posts were in Romanian and Serbian, in subs where the community shows off their own projects. The big founder and startup subs gave nothing, mostly because the posts were filtered. A question gets more conversation than an announcement. In the Arduino sub I asked "what's the first circuit you'd teach a kid?" with no link at all. It got 46 comments, more than any post with a link. Put the link in the first comment, with a source tag. Each sub gets its own ?de= parameter, so I know where each click comes from. Without that, "Reddit works" would just be a feeling. Answer every comment. It's how the account earned enough karma to post at all. Today I shipped the first seasonal update: a Halloween theme and one limited-time lesson that runs until November 10. Next I want to see whether a "thank you + update" post brings people back or just looks like spam. I'll report back. submitted by /u/Bordestef8 [link] [comments]
