Original Summary

Hey everyone, a while ago I was lucky enough to spend a longer time in Japan. Looking back, the thing I missed the most after coming home wasn't even the big sights, it was just walking. There is something almost meditative about wandering through quiet side streets in Kyoto or Tokyo for hours without really noticing how far you've gone, just stumbling across a tiny neighborhood shrine or collecting one of those ink stamps at a train station along the way. Back home, my evening walks quickly started feeling like the same grey loop every day. Most fitness apps I tried only made it worse because they constantly push you with calorie rings, pace graphs, and streak warnings if you miss a day, which is the exact opposite of that calm feeling I had in Japan. So over the last few months I built a little passion project for myself called NihonPass. The idea is pretty simple: you just go for your normal walk at home with your phone in your pocket, and your everyday steps slowly move you along illustrated routes through Japan. Whenever you reach the next spot on the map, you get a short story about that place and can press a red Hanko stamp into your passbook, similar to the stamp books people carry around temples and stations in Japan. I really wanted it to feel quiet and personal, so there are no accounts, no leaderboards, and no daily streak pressure. The whole Kyoto route is completely free to walk from start to finish, because I mostly just wanted people to experience that first journey. I'll put the link in a comment below in case anyone here likes going for walks and wants to try it out. Would love to hear what you think! submitted by /u/No-Mission-437 [link] [comments]
