Original Summary
I’m a software engineer at a startup. On my own time and laptop, I built an API + web app that verifies contractor licenses (plumbing, electrical, etc.) from state boards. I’m close to landing my first customer. My employer is in a related space (business verification). They once talked about adding license data but shelved it as too hard. My contract has an invention assignment carve-out for personal projects, unless they relate to the company’s business or “anticipated R&D,” plus a non-compete that needs written consent. I spoke to a lawyer, and he said to be transparent and get written consent. I plan to, and if they say no, I’ll shut it down. Has anyone been through this? How did the conversation go, and did you wait for consent before forming the LLC? submitted by /u/FlowerDisastrous8065 [link] [comments]
