Original Summary

I've spent the last couple of months building TraceScope, an open-source C++/Qt application for investigating log files. I finally released v1.0 earlier this month. The idea came partly from my previous engineering experiences. When I was a research assistant in college helping develop a TCAS plugin for a flight simulator, I spent a lot of time manually digging through logs from application instances on two networked computers, trying to piece together what happened during scenario test runs. Later in my career, working with radar telemetry at a defense contractor, I encountered some pretty clunky internal Qt-based tools for similar kinds of investigation. Those experiences stuck with me. What started as a relatively simple JSON Lines viewer for my software development portfolio gradually grew into a much more substantial application. It handles a variety of log formats, lets you filter and investigate events across timelines, and can follow changing log files live. It can compare investigation sessions and export full reports as interactive HTML documents. Everything runs locally, without needing a server or logging infrastructure. It's been one of the most involved personal projects I've worked on, and I'm pretty happy with where it ended up. I'd be interested to hear what people think, especially from anyone who's spent time digging through messy logs themselves.
