Original Summary

After Omegle shut down, most alternatives went video-first. I wanted the opposite: 1:1 voice or text with a random person, no camera, adults only. Things I didn't expect while building it: Waiting time is everything. People who give up on a text search usually do it in under 20 seconds. Most of my work ended up going into making matching fast, not into features. Reconnects matter more than new features. Mobile networks drop and people switch tabs. Now if someone drops, the other person sees "Reconnecting…", their unsent message stays, and they rejoin the same chat. Most "drops" turned out to be people just switching back to the tab. Anonymous + strangers needs safety from day one: age gate, separate report and block in every chat, no usernames or links shown to a stranger so nobody gets pulled off-platform. Retention is the real problem. Getting someone to try a chat is easy; getting them back tomorrow is hard. That's what I'm working on now. Stack: Next.js, a separate Node real-time server, WebRTC for voice, Postgres/Prisma, Expo for the Android app (in testing). Happy to answer questions about real-time matching or moderation.
