Original Summary

⚠️ For educational purposes only — not financial advice. I kept running into the same problem: I wanted a quick way to pull up a stock chart with a few common indicators, but most options were either web platforms buried in ads and logins, or full trading terminals with far more than I needed. So I ended up building my own solution: StockGraber. It’s a small PySide6 + finplot desktop app styled like a dark trading terminal. The process is basically: Type a ticker → press Enter → read the chart No account, no login, no ads. What it currently does Candlesticks with volume, colored by up/down day Moving-average crossovers with preset pairs (9/21, 20/50, 50/200, 100/200), switchable between SMA and EMA Golden cross / death cross markers drawn right on the chart RSI (14) and MACD (12/26/9) sub-panels, each can be shown or hidden Index comparison: pick an index (S&P 500, Nasdaq, TSX, Hang Seng, Nikkei, FTSE, DAX and more) and the chart switches to a rebased percent-change view, so you can see at a glance whether a stock beat the market over the visible window Ticker lookup: search by company name across markets and send the code straight to the chart Recent symbols remembered as one-click chips Local SQLite cache, so repeat loads are instant and only missing dates get downloaded from Yahoo Finance Works with US, Canadian (.TO), Hong Kong (.HK) tickers and indices English + Traditional Chinese, one-click toggle Windows and macOS (separate repos, helper scripts to set up, run, and build a standalone .exe / .app) I just published a video showing the whole thing in action: 🎥 https://youtu.be/e6NTT3uJTrg GitHub (Windows): https://github.com/Garionhk/StockGraber GitHub (macOS): https://github.com/Garionhk/StockGraber-MacOS The crosses and indicators are standard technical-analysis conventions, not buy/sell signals. Data comes from Yahoo Finance and can be delayed or have gaps. submitted by /u/garionhk [link] [comments]
