Original Summary
Hey! I’m the developer of Phosphor , a screen utility suite for macOS that lives in your menu bar. I’m a solo student developer, and I’m building in public. This is the story so far, and what’s launching in the next couple of days. Why I built it I started building this around two problems. The first: when you’re on your laptop late at night and switch from a dark app to a bright one, it hits like a flash before your eyes adjust. I looked and couldn’t find a tool that tries to solve that, so I built one. Phosphor’s Flashbang Protection dims the screen before you switch to it, then eases the brightness back up. It works preemptively, and the pace depends on how bright the screen you’re going to is. Dim screens come back faster, bright ones slower. The second: there are too many display utilities, each doing one thing. One tool in the menu bar is simpler than several, so I’m combining the features people actually need into one app, external and multi-monitor support included. What happened after launch I launched v1 a couple of weeks ago. Nine tools are free: Color Picker, Screenshots, Resolution Presets, Refresh Rate Control, Soft Screen, Display Schedule, Focus Spotlight, Display Health and Color Grading. Flashbang Protection is the Pro feature. Then feedback came in. Some of it was about Spaces, and fair enough. v1 only covers switching between apps on the same desktop. Swipe to another desktop, open Mission Control, or use App Exposé, and it misses. So I rebuilt it. v2 launches in the next couple of days, and here’s what changed: A new engine called Modern, which will be the default. It covers switching desktops, Mission Control and App Exposé, as well as app switches. It reads how bright the window you’re heading to is, so it dims by the right amount, then eases back up without dipping. The original engine, Classic, stays. You can pick either in Settings. The UI got a cleanup: clearer permission messages and a tidier menu bar. Also in v2: Studio: five tools for presenting and recording. Laser Pointer, Drawing, Flashlight, Keystroke Display and Invisible Notes. Ring Light is coming soon. Automatic updates. It checks once a day and asks before installing. You can turn it off. Pricing Pro costs $10 until v2 ships. If you buy it before then, Studio is free for you. When v2 ships, Pro is $19.99, one-time, not a subscription. The first 30 buyers pay $15.99. Later major upgrades are half price if you already own Pro. One license covers one Mac. The nine free tools stay free. Details macOS 13 or later. Native Swift. Privacy: No analytics, nothing about your screen or usage leaves your Mac. It only goes online to check a license key and, in v2, to look for updates, which you can turn off. Full policy: usephosphor.app/privacy , EULA: usephosphor.app/eula I’d like to hear your feedback, especially on whether Flashbang’s recovery speed feels right, or if it’s missing a switch you’d expect it to catch. Tell me what you’d actually use, and I’ll factor it in
