Hi everyone! For a couple of months, i've been building 1830belgium.com , an independent political data project focused on Belgian polling, election forecasts and political data visualization. One of the features I've been working on is an interactive map that explores how projected voting intentions for Belgium's 2029 federal election could translate geographically across the country's 565 current municipalities. With the map, you can: Explore which party is projected to be the largest in each municipality. Select a party and inspect its projected vote share. Compare the model projections with the official 2024 election results. Identify municipalities where the projected largest party changes. Switch between municipalities and provinces and zoom in to explore individual areas. The technical challenge The model produces regional projections for Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels, rather than independent forecasts for every municipality. To visualize these projections geographically, I combine the regional model estimates with the official 2024 municipal election results, mapped onto current municipal boundaries. This preserves the geographic variation in past voting patterns while illustrating how the regional projections could change the picture. It's important to note that these are model-based projections, not actual municipal polling results. Tech stack: Python, NumPy and SciPy for the forecasting model. HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the website and interactive interface. SVG for the map visualization. JSON for storing and processing election data and model outputs. I built this as an independent project because I wanted to make Belgian political data easier to explore, especially in a country where voting patterns differ substantially between regions.
