Original Summary
I pulled 300 Show HN posts from the past month and checked what actually correlates with a launch doing well. The surprising bit: the "engagement score" almost everyone uses (upvotes + 2x comments) correlates with plain upvote count at r = 0.96. Adding comments to the formula barely reorders anything. Comments look like a strong signal but they mostly track upvotes. What actually separates launches is time normalisation. Two real examples from this month: A: 554 points, 34 hours old -> 16.1 points/hour B: 2391 points, 713 hours old -> 3.3 points/hour B has 4x the upvotes. A is the one currently climbing. If you sort by lifetime totals you see B at the top and A buried at #4. A few other things I measured: The median Show HN launch moves 0.13 points/hour. The fastest this month managed 16. So "fast" here is a much lower bar than you'd guess from front-page news posts. Results arrive ranked by points, so asking for more results makes each one worse. The top 100 of a month all have 60+ points. Go to 975 and 71% have under 10. Roughly 5% of Show HN posts are text-only with no link, so they're useless as "here's a product" leads. This started as a personal tool because I wanted to see what was gaining traction rather than what already won. I turned it into an Apify Actor that returns the data sorted by momentum: https://apify.com/joey001/microsaas-sideproject-finder It's my own project, so treat the recommendation accordingly. Free to try, and the analysis above stands on its own either way — you can replicate all of it against the free HN Algolia API in about 20 lines if you'd rather. Happy to share the raw numbers or the script if anyone wants them. submitted by /u/Professional_Bag_591 [link] [comments]
