Original Summary
Started this 3 years ago - an 8-player frog battle royale that runs in the browser. Worked on it for about 3 months, then shelved it. Came back 2 months ago and went all-in. It's called PEPE Royale. No download, no wallet needed to start playing. The core principle: make a genuinely good game first. The crypto comes second. Most crypto games start with the token and bolt on a game as an afterthought. I did the opposite. If this isn't fun without any crypto involved, I've failed. The skin model is closer to CS:GO than Fortnite - 1-of-100 numbered editions instead of time-limited shop rotations. Once they sell out, the only way to get one is buying from another player. You shouldn't have to sell your entire account to sell a single skin. The timeline (condensed): 3 years ago: core concept, game design docs, first prototype Shelved it. Life happened. 2 months ago: came back, rebuilt from scratch Single-player on itch.io for playtesting, iterated on feedback Added multiplayer. This broke everything. Fixed it. Controller support for PC and mobile Built the website, migrated off itch.io Switched server types twice. WebRTC kept dropping on iPhone cellular - connections would die mid-match whenever the phone switched towers. Moved to a WebSocket relay and it finally held stable. Added a server list, then started testing a referral system Launched the alpha this week If I started over, I'd build multiplayer first instead of bolting it on later. That rewrite cost me a month. The unglamorous parts: https://reddit.com/link/1x5cf1u/video/io4o37lzlbvh1/player That's me in MS Paint at 2am hand-painting eyes onto a Pepe skin because the sprite renderer was turning them grey. The Fire Opal skin. 10 minutes of painting compressed to 60 seconds. https://imgur.com/a/q6OqOci My actual todo list. The X marks are what's done. "Make the pepper into DAS mode XXX" - tried it three times, scrapped it. Where it's at now: Single player and multiplayer alpha are both live at https://peperoyale.com Free to play, no wallet needed. I'm testing a referral system - share your link, friends play a match, you earn Silver tickets. I'm doing 1-of-100 First Edition NFT skins for early players. The token hasn't launched yet. Right now everything uses simulated currency. I'm building the player base first, token second. Would love honest feedback - is it fun, what's broken, would you play again? I've been in a bubble for months. TLDR: Shelved a frog battle royale 3 years ago, came back 2 months ago and finished it. Free browser alpha is live at peperoyale.com. Be honest with me, I need fresh eyes. submitted by /u/Joe1722 [link] [comments]
