Original Summary
✏️ I practice English by watching Netflix, and the lines that stopped me were never the hard words. They were lines where I knew every word and still didn't get it: slang, sarcasm, a joke that depends on something said two minutes earlier. I kept pausing, pasting the line into ChatGPT, explaining the scene, and by the time I had an answer I'd lost the show. So I made LingoFlix, a free Chrome extension. Hover a subtitle (or press E) and a card explains that line in that scene: a natural translation, what's going on, and the expressions worth knowing. It sends the dialogue around the line and the show and episode along, which is how it can tell you that "viejecita" in Tokio's line in Money Heist is ironic, not sweet. You can ask follow-ups in the card, like "can I say this at work?" Also in there: - A Study Log: save words, phrases and lines, grouped by show and episode. Jump back to the exact moment, or export to Anki or CSV. - Keys for previous/next line, replay the line, and hide subtitles. These work without an API key. - Explanations in 30 languages, so English learners can get them in their own language. The part I'd like feedback on: it uses your own Claude or OpenAI API key. I didn't want to run a server or sell a subscription, so requests go straight from your browser to Anthropic or OpenAI and you pay them for what you use, about [FILL: cost] a line for me. No account, no tracking, MIT licensed. Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/gdgblbcjeocifdhjfbpjpkcphlfmaoll?utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=sideproject Code: https://github.com/jaycho1214/lingoflix It just went live with zero reviews, so any feedback helps. Is bringing your own API key a dealbreaker for you? submitted by /u/IDKWUTGW [link] [comments]
