Original Summary
Hi all, I'm Nick, a dad of two in BC. I shared an early preview of RoostPay here a few weeks ago. Today is the official launch, on iPhone, Android and the web, so here's the proper launch post. The problem: in Canada, hiring a nanny or caregiver makes you an employer. You owe CPP, EI and income tax withholdings, CRA remittances, a pay stub every pay period, provincial overtime, stat holiday and vacation rules, and T4s at year end. Most families only find this out after they hire someone, and the usual options are a spreadsheet, an accountant, or payroll software built for businesses. Why I built it: We started out with an au pair and later hired a full-time nanny. We're a shift-worker household, so the hours were all over the place, and being a bit of a data nerd, I built a spreadsheet. Keeping it compliant with CRA rules and provincial employment standards cost me countless hours every pay run, and I kept wishing there was a simple app for it. So I built one. What RoostPay does: Works out CPP, EI and tax each pay period and tells you what to remit to the CRA and when Sends pay stubs straight to the caregiver's own app Shared shift schedule with clock-in, and sick days, vacation and overtime tracked by province Contract and TD1 forms signed on the phone Prepares T4 slips and the T4 Summary for the family to submit Stack: Flutter for the iPhone and Android apps, Supabase on the backend, the web app hosted on Vercel, and billing through Stripe on the web and App Store and Google Play in-app purchases on mobile. What I learned getting here: I knew marketing and distribution would be the harder part, and I was right. Thankfully I started early with a waitlist, so when I launched I was fortunate enough to have some real customers right off the get go. It's one plan, unlimited employees, with a free 30-day trial. roostpay.ca · App Store · Google Play Happy to answer anything about building for such a narrow niche, and I'd really like honest feedback on the landing page. submitted by /u/Nick_RoostPay [link] [comments]
