I tried building a Star Rail-inspired prototype with AI. It turned into a game mechanics playground.

Original Summary
Hey everyone, I’m a full-time software engineer from Taiwan and a gamer. I mostly play action games and RPGs on PS5, but I enjoy trying different genres too. Recently, after wrapping up a stretch of gaming and seeing people share their indie games online, I wanted to try making something myself. Claude and Codex already make my day-to-day work much easier. I was curious how far I could take them in something I had almost no practical experience with: game development. I started with a turn-based prototype inspired by Honkai: Star Rail. I even reinstalled the game after nearly two years away to study it again. Claude helped me get a small 2D prototype running surprisingly quickly, with familiar core combat mechanics. Seeing it actually work was exciting. I then built a control panel so I could change stats and experiment with the combat. Somewhere along the way, I became more interested in understanding the mechanics behind games I enjoy. Could I turn those questions into something I could adjust, simulate, and play? That became Game Mechanics Lab: https://xtype0x.github.io/game-mechanics-lab/ About a week ago, the turn-based prototype started growing into this personal website for studying game mechanics. The gacha simulator is a small tool that spun out of the combat project. My first experiment beyond Star Rail was parrying and dodging: exposing timing windows and other rules as adjustable parameters, inspecting the results frame by frame, and trying the same settings in a small playable game. The clip shows a small part of the parry and dodge experiment: setting up attacks, testing inputs, and seeing how each one is judged frame by frame. I might try some 3D experiments with Three.js next. I’m still figuring out where this project will go. Maybe I’ll eventually combine what I learn into a game of my own. If you enjoy digging into game mechanics, I’d love to hear your thoughts—or which mechanic you’d like to see explored next. submitted by /u/xtype0x [link] [comments]
