Original Summary

https://reddit.com/link/1x47msc/video/8iyn8qp1n2vh1/player my mac kept running out of space and storage settings just showed a huge gray system data bar with no way to see what was in it. went digging and a big chunk of it was symbol caches from a background process called coresymbolicationd. it saves files every time an app crashes or gets debugged so the crash logs are readable, and then it just never deletes them. on a dev machine it gets ridiculous. you can clear it manually and macos rebuilds whatever it actually needs, but it took me a whole evening to figure out what was safe to delete. so i built a little menu bar app that scans for that and a few other caches, tells you what each one actually is, and only touches stuff thats safe. biggest thing ive noticed so far is nobody trusts cleaner apps, which honestly is fair after years of mackeeper. showing exactly what each file is seems to matter way more than the big gb number. its called symbolsweep if anyone wants to try the scan, https://symbolsweep.com/?ref=sideproject for anyone who has shipped a mac utility, how did you get past the "this looks like mackeeper" reaction? and did free scan/pay to clean work better for you than just charging up front? submitted by /u/ruprechttmb [link] [comments]
