Original Summary
You probably know the feeling. You remember the file perfectly, the invoice for the washing machine repair, the photo of the whiteboard, but not what you called it. That’s the problem BeaconFind tries to solve. You type what you remember and it looks inside your documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, slides, emails and images. Screenshots and scanned PDFs get read with OCR, photos are matched by what’s in them, and it works across languages, so searching in English finds a German contract. On faster machines you can also just ask a question, and it answers with a link to the file and page it got it from. All of that runs on your own computer. Your files, your searches and the index stay there, and the index is encrypted. The only things that go online are a licence check and an update check, and you can block both without breaking search. It’s been on sale since the summer, on Windows and now on Mac too. People have bought it, which still feels a bit surreal, and they’ve been great at telling me what’s wrong: a first download that failed without saying anything, a crash on a really old Excel file, the app getting heavy on a library of 180,000 files. Fixing those is most of what I’ve done these last weeks. What it doesn’t do yet: audio and video are only found by name, it’s closed source, and it’s paid after a 14-day trial ($29 once or $2 a month). The first start downloads the AI models, somewhere between 0.8 and 6 GB depending on your machine. If you give it a go, I’d love to know what you searched for first and whether it found it. beaconfind.app submitted by /u/ArcherFamiliar3165 [link] [comments]
