Original Summary
i built this myself over about six months. ios only, first month free, no code needed. what it is: my 4yo uses real youtube.com inside the app, and every video she taps gets checked before it plays, for language, age fit and whether a real person actually made it. comments are hidden. i have posted here twice before and both times the same thing came back from about seven different people. parents cannot tell what the app is actually doing, and several of you said open source was the floor for trusting anything that sits near a kid. ReachingForVega put it as auditability being the thing that builds trust, and QuanTradin said hardly any parent is going to read the source of a kids app anyway. i went with the second one. the parent screen lists every video she tapped, whether it played or got blocked, and the reason in plain english. when the check is not confident the video does not play at all, it stops and asks me for my pin. i have not open sourced it and i am not planning to. the part i am less proud of: that ask-a-parent behaviour is still sitting near the bottom of my app store listing. i told someone in last weeks thread i was moving it to the top this week and i have not done it yet. so the actual question. for an app that sits between your kid and youtube, what would make you trust it enough to install it. a readable log of every decision the thing made, or is nothing short of the source code going to do it for you. i would rather hear it now than keep guessing at the listing. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kidwatch-safe-video-for-kids/id6791762339 submitted by /u/Easy_Syllabub3978 [link] [comments]
