Original Summary
What it is: MakanApa, an iOS app that ends the "where do we eat?" debate. One tap picks somewhere nearby. Or you give it a craving, budget and distance, and it picks from that and explains why it chose that place. Why: In Malaysia, deciding where to eat with friends takes longer than eating. There are also local details that generic apps miss, like halal filtering (users verify it, and unverified places are clearly marked). Stack: - iOS: SwiftUI, iOS 18+, Google Maps SDK - Backend: Laravel 13, Redis - Recommendations: a ranking system I wrote myself, with Claude Haiku for the "why this place" explanations and for working out what the user is craving - Place data: Google Places API Biggest surprise: the AI is the cheap part. An LLM call costs about $0.0008. A Google Places lookup that isn't cached costs about $0.25, roughly 300 times more. Most of my backend work went into caching place data and reusing what's already in my database, not into the AI. Other things I built: - A community section with campus ambassadors who hand-pick places for their university - A "blind box" shuffle that picks one of your saved places, with an animation, when you can't choose Where I'm stuck: Getting the first 1,000 users :(( Feedback on the onboarding and the first pick is especially welcome. That's where people decide whether to keep the app. Appstore link: MakanApa - What to eat submitted by /u/SatisfactionNo7297 [link] [comments]
