Original Summary

Not a database. Just json and markdown files in git. Two years in, three things actually hurt. Searching first. grep is great until you want 'every record whose status changed this month' and then you're writing throwaway scripts forever. Second, relationships. The moment records reference each other you need a resolver, and congratulations, you've built a bad database on purpose. Third one is the sneaky one, concurrent edits. Git merges prose fine. It does not merge 40 lines of json fine. Still keeping it though. The whole catalogue is diffable, portable, and readable in twenty years without running anything. Next time I'd just add a thin query layer on day one instead of month eight. submitted by /u/Dismal_Laugh4891 [link] [comments]
