Original Summary
We are supportive of artists getting paid when AI models rip their content We make an effort to credit sources when cartoons are posted as memes We're mad that Spotify pays musicians pennies But when an app developer asks for money for their work, the question is "why isn't it free?" or "why isn't it open source?" That is if we give it any attention at all. I don't get the double standard. Just like artists and musicians, software developers want more than 'likes'. As a small indie dev, it's already extremely difficult to get a foot in the door because of the sheer amount of apps being created. The only way in seems to offer your work for free, and when you switch to paid later, you're called greedy. So passion projects are abandoned, stuff doesn't get made or improved. It's a net loss the way I look at it. Why is software dev the exception? What makes paying a developer different from paying an artist or musician? submitted by /u/JD1618 [link] [comments]
