Original Summary

Hey everyone! I'm a solo dev and I want to share my latest side project: QuestLog. I always struggled to consistently track my expenses. Traditional apps were either too complex (forcing bank connections) or too boring (just digital spreadsheets). I like games and progression systems, so I decided to build a financial tracker that felt a little more like an RPG. The Concept QuestLog is completely manual by design. I didn't want automatic bank syncs because manually writing down an expense forces you to be conscious of your spending. To keep you motivated to do this manual work, the app uses gamification: you earn XP, level up, maintain streaks, and complete missions just by logging your finances and staying on budget. The Tech Stack & The "Zero Assets" Approach I built this app using Flutter and Dart. For data persistence, it uses Hive (a lightweight NoSQL database), ensuring the app is completely offline-first. One technical challenge I set for myself during development was a "Zero Assets" doctrine. Almost the entire UI, including the custom icons and the neon/glassmorphism aesthetics, is procedurally rendered using CustomPainter and Canvas in Flutter, rather than relying on external image files (PNGs/SVGs). Privacy & Local Storage Because of the offline-first architecture, your financial data stays strictly on your device. As the developer, I have zero access to what you enter. There is no cloud database for your financial records, only a local backup system that you completely control. Main Features: Manual expense and income tracking RPG elements: XP, levels, streaks, and achievements Daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly statistics Procedural Dark Mode / Glassmorphism UI * Multiple currencies and languages support QuestLog is now available globally on Google Play: 👉 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.questlog.finance Since this is r/SideProject , I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts on the app, the UI/UX, or the technical approach. Have any of you experimented with procedural UI/Canvas rendering instead of traditional assets? And do you think gamification is an effective way to handle mundane tasks like budgeting? Any honest feedback — especially constructive criticism — is highly appreciated! submitted by /u/jorge_ezequiel [link] [comments]
