Original Summary
I’m the developer of DamnPDFs , a free PDF and file toolkit I’ve just launched. Sharing my own project here for feedback. It has 70 tools: edit existing PDF text, compress, merge, split, sign, convert Word and PowerPoint, OCR scans, work with images, and connect steps into workflows. No account is required and the tools don’t add a watermark. While building and testing it, three problems kept coming up. Here’s a practical way to handle them, regardless of which tool you use. 1. A PDF is too big for an email or upload form Start with lossless compression so you preserve the page content. If it barely shrinks, large images may be the main cause. Try an image-compression mode, then zoom in on small text, screenshots and charts before sharing the result. For example, a fictional 12 MB report needs to fit a 5 MB portal limit. Don’t assume every PDF can reach that target without visible changes. If readable compression still isn’t enough, split it into smaller parts if the portal accepts multiple files. Keep the original and check the exported file size. 2. You can see words, but cannot edit them A scanned page is an image; visible words aren’t necessarily editable text objects. OCR can make the scan searchable, but it doesn’t automatically reconstruct a perfectly editable Word-style layout. For PDFs with native text, replace a short phrase first and inspect the download. Long replacements may overlap nearby content because a PDF isn’t a flowing word-processing document. DamnPDFs also supports annotations when adding a note is the better option. 3. Word or PowerPoint conversion changes the layout Use the high-fidelity conversion option for complex Word layouts. PowerPoint conversion supports PPT, PPTX and ODP, with each slide becoming a PDF page. Review fonts, tables, page breaks and graphics afterward; font substitution can still change the result. Processing and limits Some tools run locally in the browser. Heavy conversions use temporary cloud processing, with the processing choice shown in the tool. Optional AI features require your own provider API key, and provider charges can apply. A visible signature isn’t a certificate-based digital signature. Please use non-private sample files when reporting problems. Which PDF task gives you the most trouble? submitted by /u/graliusakaspeed [link] [comments]
