Original Summary
Built Eavesdrop because I kept pausing videos in fullscreen just to scroll down and read comments. It's a floating panel that shows them right over the player — normal, theater, and fullscreen — positioned so it never covers subtitles. The build itself took longer than I expected. A Chrome extension content script runs in two separate JS worlds that can't share variables or call each other directly — one has access to the page's own data, the other has access to the extension's storage. They only talk through custom events, so even something simple like "is this user on the free or paid plan" has to cross that bridge. And the panel has to track the YouTube player as it moves between normal, theater, true fullscreen (which actually reparents it into a different container, not just resizes it), and miniplayer — I spent a chunk of this week specifically chasing a bug where the panel would land in the wrong spot after exiting fullscreen, because of exactly that reparenting. What it does: drag it, resize it, search comments, jump to timestamps people mention, save the good ones with notes and tags. No account, no tracking, no ads — reads comments through YouTube's own official API. It's been live a week, free to use, with an optional one-time Pro unlock for saved-comment tools and sharing. Still very early — no reviews yet, so if you give it a try I'd genuinely appreciate one. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ibinjbffelhnknbgakdfkjeelppacncd Feedback welcome, especially anything that feels off. submitted by /u/IncantatemPriori [link] [comments]
