Original Summary

For the last 2-3 months I've been building BetterBudget, a budgeting app where the main screen is a chat interface. You link your accounts (read-only through Plaid [MX and Finicity on roadmap if the app gets traction]; it can never move money), or import your bank's CSV then ask things like "Can I afford a $200 concert ticket this month?" or "What are my reoccurring expenses?" It answers from your own numbers with visuals and reasoning. From there you can have a dialog for whatever your goals or questions may be. I know there are other apps that do similar but I was looking for something with less bloat, easier to use/navigate, and as an old mint.com alternative with regards to a large inventory of banks and institutions to integrate with for managing accounts. We were in closed beta for about 2 weeks and now open beta for a week, and the feedback has already changed the app for the better: A tester asked how to import a CSV. While recording a how-to, we found that importing the same file twice doubled every row. Now a repeat import skips doesn't cause duplicates. What would have been a major headache if the issue scaled. The CSV importer only took one exact file layout. Now it reads a bank's own export as it comes, and shows you how it read the file before anything is imported. When a bank connection breaks, there's a Reconnect button instead of linking it again. If an account shows up twice, you can merge the two so each transaction counts once. Android testers couldn't sign in at all; the security check and quality gates said it passed, then sign-in timed out. Android reports where the security check answer comes from differently than iPhone does, and the app on Android was ignoring the security answer. All negative tests missed from our own internal testing. Where it is now: public beta on Apple TestFlight and Google Play. US and Canada only, because bank linking works with US and Canadian banks and lower barrier to entry as far as regulations. Everyone in the beta gets a subscription tier for free until three months after launch, and anyone who sends feedback (good or bad) gets six months free. What I'm looking for: people who'll link one account or import one CSV, ask it one real question, and tell me where it confused them or got something wrong. Critical notes help most. Happy to answer anything about how it's built including security and regulatory. submitted by /u/Reasonable-Bat-5712 [link] [comments]
